Songs of Summer

With summer break quickly approaching, students are searching for fresh songs to add to their playlists. We chose a few popular music genres and gave our suggestions for underrated songs and artists that we think students will enjoy listening to this summer. We in

cluded the perspectives of three different editors with contrasting music tastes to pick songs we think people would appreciate. Check out our Spotify playlist, where we compiled all our songs, along with a couple of others!

Country- LS

Artist: Mitchell Tenpenny

Mitchell Tenpenny is an artist whose lyrics are beautifully written and can be appreciated by country fans and non-country listeners alike. If you’re looking for catchy songs to vibe to with the windows down, I’d highly recommend checking out Tenpenny’s latest album “This is Heavy.”

Songs:

“We Got History” – Mitchell Tenpenny

“Sand in My Boots” – Morgan Wallen

“Eyes on You” – Chase Rice

“865” – Morgan Wallen

“Broadway Girls” – Lil Durk (feat. Morgan Wallen)

Indie- EM

Artist: Sarah and the Sundays

Sarah and the Sundays is a quintessential summer band, with a sound that perfectly matches a bright blue sky and swim trunks. With catchy guitar riffs and the classic good-not-great lead singer that characterizes much of indie music, Sarah and the Sundays is a great go-to for a summery ethos.

Songs:

“Vices” – Sarah and the Sundays

“Light Pollution” – MAK

“Protection” – The Weather Machine

“Clementine” – Sun Room

“Hesitation” – Hot Flash Heat Wave

Rhythm & Blues- SGD

Artist: Tyler, the Creator

In late March of 2023, Tyler dropped his extended album “CALL ME IF YOU GET LOST: The Estate Sale,” which included eight new songs that were initially cut from his 2019 album. To me, summer is about color, life and energy, and Tyler, the Creator delivers all three with his jazzy and percussive instrumentals.

Songs:

“WHARF TALK” – Tyler, the Creator (feat. A$AP Rocky)

“Altar” – Kehlani

“Out of Time” – The Weeknd

“Temptation” – Joey Bada$$

“Do You Like Me?” – Daniel Caesar

Melodic Rap- LS

Artist: Polo G

Taurus Tremani Bartlett, also known as Polo G, releases banger after banger and is one of my favorite artists of all time. Polo G provides strong vocals on top of beautiful rap tempos, which creates the perfect songs to sing along to. While I often don’t support the messages in the lyrics, the songs are very catchy.

Songs:

“My All” – Polo G

“Go Hard” – Lil Baby

“No 808’s” – A Boogie Wit Da Hoodie (feat. Vory)

“Barbarian” – Calboy (feat. Lil Tjay)

“And This Is Just the Intro” – Tory Lanez

Old-School Rap- EM

Artist: Jayy Grams

J. Cole, Redveil, Denzel Curry, Lil Wayne, Nas. If these names resonate with you– or even if they don’t– Jayy Grams is the next artist I suggest adding to your rotation. At only 18 years old, Grams fuses old-school production with new-school lyricism.

Songs:

“Unstoppable” – Jayy Grams

“Princess” – Shy High

“Iron Horse” – Rob Cave (feat. Dallas Penn)

“Raid On Onigashima” – AKAI SOLO

“get out” – jacuzzi jefferson (feat KOOL A.D.)
