On the evening of Thursday, March 12, the boys’ soccer team was preparing for a Friday afternoon match against Overlake. Then it began to snow. Overnight and into the next morning, over four inches fell onto the eastside field where the boys’ soccer team was supposed to play, according to weather reports printed in the Seattle Times. The game was canceled on the morning of March 15.
“I’m extremely disappointed,” senior captain and goalkeeper Auggie Reid said. “Friday night games at Overlake are extremely fun… all of our players dressed up in business clothes like suits and ties for the game.”
Senior captain and midfielder Max Cook appreciated that the game wouldn’t take place in freezing conditions.
“They had four inches of snow, and at midday the snow wouldn’t stop coming, so there was too much snow on the field,” Cook said. “If you’ve ever played soccer in the snow, you know it’s a terrible experience overall. The snow sticks to the ball really dramatically, so the ball gets really heavy and really, really, hard to kick.”
Reid agrees with Cook about the difficulty of playing in the snow.
“The hardest part for me is the temperature because my gloves don’t provide a lot of warmth,” Reid said. “My hands get super cold, I can’t feel the ball as well, it’s super slippery and it’s hard to hold onto stuff.”
According to Cook, the game was rescheduled to April 30, when the weather will hopefully be more suited for a soccer game.
