Fall has arrived in Seattle. The leaves are changing, the temperature is shifting and the colors are arriving throughout the city in the trees and decorations. If there is time between school, homework and extracurriculars, there are some great ways to get into the spirit of the season. As we dive into fall, let’s take a look at some activities we explored in and around the city this year that are affordable for students’ friends and families to enjoy.
There may be no more classic fall activity than slicing and dicing your way through a ripe orange pumpkin, as preparing for Halloween is one of the most popular times of fall. We set off to test our carving skills in preparation for the season.
Most of your neighborhood grocery stores should have pumpkins perfect for carving. Along with the pumpkins, pick up a carving kit to help you create your best work. It is a great time to spend the evening with your friends and get into the fall spirit. Plan, carve and laugh until your Jack-O-Lanterns are complete and your hands reek of pumpkin.
Between the classic autumn setting of a field filled with pumpkins with the aroma of fruits and spices, the apple cannon at Bob’s Corn & Pumpkin Farm draws you right into the spirit of the season.
There is something so cathartic about launching a hard fruit at incredibly high speeds at a far-off target in a pumpkin patch.
There’s nothing wrong with a little friendly competition as you take turns firing Granny Smiths, seeing who can get the best shot. Weekday afternoons are ideal, as the commute from UPrep is less than an hour, and there is a scenic route of hundreds of cars in all directions as you make your way through Seattle traffic.
There is no more authentic way to kick off your fall season than attending a Washington Huskies game. Visiting the Dawgs on a Saturday at Alaska Airlines Field, also known as “The Greatest Setting in College Football,” is a great way to get into the Seattle fall spirit. Seats are much more accessible and affordable than those at Lumen Field to watch the Seahawks play, and there is a different feeling supporting your local school team.
Check out the different flavors of Husky Stadium, such as Ivar’s fish and chips, Kid Valley garlic fries or the overly sweet apple fritter pulled pork sandwich. The music of the marching band, the shine of the helmets and the roaring chants of “Bow Down To Washington” from the student section are all fall staples. Along with the classic yellows and oranges of fall, its sub-colors should be purple and gold.
