After a playoff run last year, The University Prep Girls Basketball team looks for yet another successful season. As the season kicks off, varsity coach Andrew Schneider has high hopes for the team.
“I’m really excited about this season. I think we have a strong team, and there’s a lot of good positive energy on the team,” Schneider said. “It’s a good sort of balance between experience and a new talent.”
In order for the team to improve from last year, Schneider believes that they need to work hard on the court.
“I think the biggest thing that will determine whether we have a successful season in terms of win-loss record is shooting with confidence and attacking offensive rebounds,” Schneider said. “If we’re only getting one shot at each possession, we’re not going to be winning games.”
One of Varsity’s star players, junior Kori Billingslea, believes that the team’s biggest strength is their determination to win.
“I think that, you know, when we get out on the court, people, you know, understand that there’s a game that we’re trying to win,” Billingslea said. “I see the hustlers that we have on our team doing a decent job of communicating with each other.
Billingslea was All-Conference First Team for the Coho division last season and hopes to do even better in the upcoming years.
“It’s something that I definitely would like to have again this year. And you know, winning MVP would be nice,” Bilingslea said. “Of course, it’s not my main priority, but it’s a goal that I wouldn’t mind hitting this year and next year.”
