Just When You Think You Know Someone…

Get an Inside Look at the Exotic and Unexpected Pet Owners Here at UPrep Middle School

Just when you think you know someone, it turns out they have a bearded dragon named Sandy.

Here at University Prep many students have traditional pets like cats, dogs, and maybe even fish. You might be surprised to find out they also have pets such as reptiles, rodents, and arthopods.

Sixth-grader Sonya Carter has a hedgehog named Luna. Carter has had Luna since June and has loved the time she has spent with her. She has always really liked hedgehogs and was excited to finally get one.

“I have grandparents who live in Germany and there are wild hedgehogs there,” Carter said.

Carter likes that they are very small and easy to take care of. They are also unexpectedly friendly.

She dislikes that they are nocturnal because she doesn’t get to spend much time with Luna during the day. Despite this creature’s prickly exterior, Luna has made Carter very happy.

Eighth-grader Kellen McHugh has had a bearded dragon named Sandy since the summer of fifth grade. Sandy was a rescue from the local pet shelter.

“I would rather have gotten a pet that needed a home,” McHugh said.

According to McHugh there is quite a lot of care that goes into it, including cleaning the animal and the cage. McHugh enjoys spending time with her, so rather than viewing it as a burden he makes the most out of it.

Not all fascinating pets have to be out of the ordinary. Middle school English teacher Eric Huff took in a greyhound named Ebby from Greyhound Pets Inc. in Woodinville.

Greyhound Pets Inc. rescues and receives greyhounds from around the world. Ebby was found on the streets of South Korea being used as a racing dog, according to Huff. She was then sent to this organization but stayed there for a year because of her unusual and ever growing amount of energy.

According to Huff, Ebby sleeps for a majority of the day, but the time spent not sleeping is spent sprinting around the house or outside. Because of that Ebby is not able to be off leash.

“One thing we like about Ebby is that she is really entertaining,” Huff said.

Dogs and cats are not the only pets pet owners have here at University Prep. These are just a few examples of many amazing and unique animals.
