University Prep’s varsity girls ultimate beat Overlake 8-7 in a nail-biter last Thursday. This was UPrep’s second game of the season, coming off of a dominating 13-2 win against Eastside Prep.

Going into the game, the UPrep team was confident.

“We have a history with Overlake; we usually beat them,” junior Nubia Robles said.

Despite starting the game on defense, Overlake scored the first point putting UPrep behind. The first six points were all close contests, and the game was tied at 3-3. UPrep’s defense was strong, swatting down 10 Overlake passes.

By the seventh point, UPrep looked to have find their footing and go up by two points to make the score 5-3. Backing these points were great defensive plays by Elise Anderson and Jane Scroggs and smooth offensive plays, breaking Overlake’s zone defense. In the eighth point of the game, Anderson blocked an Overlake pass, then immediately after Maggie Scroggs picked up the disk, she threw a long pass down the field back to Anderson, scoring a quick point.

After 10 points, UPrep was up 6-4, only needing to score one point to force halftime (which is caused as soon as a team reaches seven points). But Overlake scored two in a row, tying the game at 6-6. UPrep scored the next point to be up by one starting the second half.

After the half, there were only 15 minutes left in the game. Overlake scored the first goal to tie the game, forcing a universe point. This is a point where whichever team wins the point wins the game.

UPrep started on offense, and after a few passes, turned the ball over. Overlake was then unsuccessful in scoring, so UPrep received a second chance. UPrep marched up the field, completing 24 passes in a row and ending it with Senior Malvika Wadhawan, scoring the winning point, her third point of the game.
