On May 2, the middle school Associated Student Body (ASB) executive elections for the 2025-2026 school year concluded.
However, according to a poll of 58 middle school students, more than half still have their doubts about the ASB, with several questioning their responsibilities and the voting process. In fact, the average rating for the ASB was around 2.5 out of 5.
Seventh grader Jade Slobin has strong opinions regarding the voting system for the middle school ASB.
“I feel like the voting system is very harsh because people who vote for their friends and people who have more friends win,” Slobin said.
However, she also thinks that the system is hard to change.
“Unfortunately, it’s just middle schoolers wanting to look for people that they like instead of the people that would actually do a good job,” Slobin said.
Eighth grader Elliot Goldberg echoes a similar sentiment about the voting system.
“I think they should change the voting system so it’s not by popularity because a speech won’t change someone’s mind,” Goldberg said.
Goldberg dislikes the lack of accountability of the ASB as well.
“They want to get elected, like, ‘I’m going to do this,’ or ‘I’m going to do that,’ but they wind up just planning dances or doing assemblies and really nothing else,” Goldberg said.
He believes that the ASB should have more capability to change things.
“I think that being present at the middle school should give you power to change things,” Goldberg said.
The current middle school ASB president, eighth grader Grace Jin, says that people have unrealistic expectations for the job.
“They kind of look at us as an outlet for them to change every single thing they find unsatisfactory,” Jin said.
She also feels that there has been a lot of negativity towards the middle school ASB.
“We basically never hear positive feedback,” Jin said.
According to Jin, the ASB is working hard to make changes.
“On ASB, we are trying our very best and putting in the time, effort and consideration into all of your opinions, but it is impossible, really, to make everyone happy,” Jin said.
