Dear UPrep,
For the past two years, we have had the privilege of being the editors-in-chief of The Puma Press. We both started as reporters in ninth grade, Carter continuing the Headstrom legacy and Teddy completely on accident. For the first two years, we covered everything from COVID-19 testing to boba tasting.
After two years as reporters, our advisor Scott Collins decided we were ready to be the editors-in-chief. With the combination of help from Scott, the support from our families and the community, and our amazing co-editor Sydney Woogerd (‘24) we were successful in putting out six issues our junior year.
We returned our senior year for another six issues. This year has been a rollercoaster.
During our time as editors, we learned about the importance of scholastic journalism. We learned the importance of holding officials accountable and speaking up for those who didn’t have a voice. We also learned that hard work pays off. As editors, our paper won an Emerald Award from Washington Journalism Education Association, a silver crown from Columbia Scholastic Press Association, an All-American from National Scholastic Press Association, and came in sixth in best in show at the National Convention in Philadelphia.
We want to thank everyone who has ever picked up one of our newspapers. Whether you flipped to the back to read Heard in the Hallways or read the paper cover to cover, thank you. Awards are incredibly fulfilling but not as fulfilling as walking into the commons and seeing our product in the hands of our peers and then hearing the positive feedback from the community.
Thank you to everyone who we interviewed. It is incredibly daunting and scary but is absolutely necessary for our work.
We wanted to thank our staff. You all make this job worth it. We have loved working with all of you and have appreciated your hard work all year.
Last but not least, thank you, Scott. You took a chance on two sophomores who didn’t know much more than those ninth graders. You have led us with utter grace and have taught us so much, not just about journalism but about life. We couldn’t have done this without you, Scott. Thank you for teaching us, leading us and especially, putting up with us.
