UPrep’s construction of the ULab building spread the campus out and improved the school greatly. However, with no food in the new area, it causes students who want to study or stay in the building to choose between eating lunch or working due to the Commons line being so long.
UPrep needs to put food in the ULab. As the student body expands and the lunch line grows in size, the culinary problem will only worsen. Adding food options in the ULab would kill two birds with one stone. Not only would it give students options, but it would also shorten the commons line.
Commons cashier Michael Raby has wanted to get food in the new building. However, there are logistical issues to work through from the business perspective, as it is expensive to hire a new person, and also difficult to move the food over that distance. He did mention that it would only be possible at key times throughout the day like snack and lunch.
Even if the Commons Cafe cannot provide service for the ULab, a vending machine would still be helpful. A snack to keep the stomach happy is better than nothing. Even just adding a bin for reusable bowls and utensils in the building would help keep the commons less crowded, as students would be more spread out.
We are currently in the middle of a massive adjustment period for the school due to the new building. There has not been this big of a change to the campus since the classroom building was created. UPrep will continue to morph over the next few years. It is time the school created amenities that reflect the changed situation.
