Block Blast has become a game students are fixated on, some playing up to “two to three hours” per day after school.
“It’s so addicting,” eighth grader Azania Santiago said.
How you play is there are different blocks, and you put them in a grid. When a full line is formed they disappear, giving players points. The point is to beat your own high score. You lose when you run out of space to put new blocks.
People like trying to beat their own record which makes them return to the app over and over again.
“You want to get a high score and keep playing,” sixth grader Leia Marin-Crowley said.
Seventh grader Abby Kahssai agrees that the game is addicting, but that doesn’t mean they think it’s necessarily the worst way you can spend your time
“It’s not a bad game [to play],” Kahssai said.
For some students after a long day of school, Block Blast can be a nice way to relax.
It’s something to do to get your mind off things when you’re bored, according to sixth grader, Luke Vukelic.
Though what is it that draws kids in? Sure they like to beat their own high score but that can’t be it. One attribute is the animations and bright colors. Every time you clear a row of blocks, little rainbow sparks will pop out.
One of the reasons Santiago finds herself obsessed with block blast is, “all those animations that have colorful things.”
Students who download the game were influenced by their friends or videos they have seen online.
“People on social media started playing, and then everyone started playing and downloading it,” Kahssai said.
You can play Block Blast basically anywhere because it does not require wifi to play. Students play it at various different times of the day, before or after school.
“Probably at night, [when] I’m about to go to sleep,” Santiago said, “and then while I play it, I also listen to music.”
Hungry Studio is the owner of Block Blast. The app is free and people can access it through the Apple App store or Google Play.
